9 Books Every Animal Lover Should Read

With the release of the trailer for the motion picture adaptation of A Dog’s Purpose, pet lovers have gone crazy looking to pick up ‘furry’ books to read this fall. And since I have more pets than the beach has sand…here are my top picks:

  1. DEWEY
    dwey.jpg
One of the very first books that I read, this one tells the true story of Dewey Readmore Books, a small town library cat who was destined to change hundreds of people’s lives, attain world fame and be a staunch companion for the author who was battling cancer and a broken family. In my opinion, if you haven’t read Dewey, you haven’t experienced anything that the literary world has to offer. BUY NOW!
  2. A DOG’S PURPOSE
    dog's purpose.jpg
You can call this book literature with a twist. It’s told by the dog as he experiences different aspects of life, in search of what makes a canine’s life meaningful. It’s funny, it’s touching, it’s utterly eye-opening.Definitely a good book to read with your furry friend curled up against you in bed. BUY NOW!
  3. A STREET CAT NAMED BOB
    bob
Ah, what better to feed your animal-loving soul than a true story of a loving pet rescuing his owner both spiritually and materially? Keep some tissues handy, because this book is one hell of a roller-coaster ride. BUY NOW!
  4. THE ART OF RACING IN THE RAIN
    art of.jpg
Another wonderful tale told by a dog. Maybe more dogs should become writers! This book is what you should gift to friends who don’t believe you when you say that your dog understands every word you say. It’s a heartwarming tale of friendship and doggy psychology that you won’t be able to resist. BUY NOW!
  5.  THE CAT WHO CAME BACK FOR CHRISTMAS
    catcame.jpg
Another heartwarming true story with a Christmas miracle- perfect for your winter booklist. Read this book to find how a stray cat helped the author’s autistic son recover and bond with his family. But what happened when the cat went missing? He never forgot the little boy whose life he changed- in short, he came back for Christmas. BUY NOW!
  6. MARLEY AND ME
    MARLEY.jpg
A contemporary book that has now been given the ‘classic’ status. Sure, the movie with Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson was great too, but it’s when you read Marley’s story from the author’s own (metaphorical) lips, you’ll realize how much the love of a dog made life easier for him. And not just any dog- a crazy, neurotic, mango-eating, publicly-pooping dog. Need I say more? BUY NOW!
  7. WHITE FANG
    WHITEFANG'.jpg
I decided not to include Call of the Wild in this list, because, well, everyone knows about it! White Fang is a slightly underrated work of Jack London, but not lesser. It’s a tale of how love can tame even the most ruthless beasts and that there is always hope. BUY NOW!
  8. FOLLOWING ATTICUS
    ATTICUS.jpg
Forty-eight high peaks, one little dog, and an extraordinary friendship. Perfect book for persuading your Mom to bring along your little buddy on a hiking trip. Dogs are wonderful, faithful companion and what more do you need in a mountaineering pal? This is exactly the kind of book one should read to children, to make them see dogs not just as animals but as very advanced ‘people’. BUY NOW!

  9. THE INCREDIBLE JOURNEY
INCREDIBLE.jpg
And finally- the coup de grâce. This book has everything a pet lover could possibly dream of in a book- a feline, two canines and a lost family. This book tells the amazing story of these three pets’ attempt to locate their owners- it’s a tale of survival, love, and the strong animal instinct of survival. BUY NOW!
